Field Sample CSV File Uploading/Merging

CSV File Upload/Merge

The field sample layer option CSV File Upload/Merge allows for a soil sample CSV (comma separated value) files to be uploaded to existing field sample layers. See help below.

Uploading Field Sample CSVs

  1. On any empty Field Sample Layer go to the "Action" drop down menu, located near the upper right corner of the map screen, within the gray panel. Please Note: Empty field sample layers are field sample points with no data associated to them. Empty field sample layers appear within the profile tree in red text
  2. From Action drop-down menu select "CSV File Upload/Merge"
  3. Click "Go".
  4. The system opens "CSV Upload" window.
  5. Input the type of sample, lab, and sample date.
  6. Click the "Choose File" button.
  7. The system opens an exploratory window to the computer being used. Select the csv file then click "Add/Upload".
  8. The system opens "Import Sample Data" window.
  9. The next few steps will require knowing the column headers for data within the CSV file. Open the CSV file in a spreadsheet viewer (like Microsoft Excel).
  10. With the CSV file open, use the "Sample ID" drop-down menu to define which column in the CSV contains the sample IDs.
  11. Use the "Add Element" drop-down menu to select an element that appears within the CSV then click "Add".
  12. A new row appears under the dark gray headers.
  13. If the CSV Column drop-down menu displays ---, then use that drop-down menu to select the column within the CSV that contains that nutrient data.
  14. Repeat steps 11-13 until all needed elements have been selected and mapped.
  15. Ensure the proper Units (and if desired methods) have been associated with all the elements added.
  16. If this same soil sample line up will be used again in the future, Click "Save As Template" to prevent from having to re-map nutrients with next CSV File Upload/Merge action.
  17. Click "Import".

Import Sample Data Window Options Explained

  • Sample ID Column Drop-Down Menu: This menu populates based on the column headers within the provided CSV.
  • Add Element Drop-down Menu: This menu populates with system provided elements.
  • Load Template Button: If a soil sampling nutrient Template has been defined before, this button will allow for that template to be selected.
  • Save As Template Button: After steps 1-14 above, a soil sample nutrient set up may be saved as a template to facilitate future CSV uploads. Click the "Save as Template" button, give the template a name, then click "Save Template".
  • Email Results Check Box: Selecting this box causes the Soil sampling upload to alert the user when complete.

CSV File Upload Merge FAQ

What is an empty Field Sample layer/How are empty Field Sample layers created?

  • Empty Field Sample layers are field sample layers where the geographical sampling point locations are logged, however there is not yet nutrient data associated with the points. There are several different ways that empty field sample points may be created. See table below for help topics on each option.
Process See Help Topic
FieldAlytics Mobile App: Completing a point sampling job, or zone sampling job on the FieldAlytics Mobile app, will create an empty field sample layer. Mobile Soil Sampling
Converting from Directed Sampling Layer: On a Directed Sampling layer stored under a field, selecting "Submit Points" will create an empty field sample layer. Directed Sample Level Actions
Grower Sample Event : The Grower Sample Event Utility can be reached by right clicking over the Grower within the Profile Tree, and will create empty field sample layers based on the Directed Sampling Layers (or field centroid) selected within the utility. Grower Sample Event
Farm Sample Event: Just like the Grower Sample Event Utility, the Farm Sample Event utility will allow empty field sample layers to be created based on stored directed sampling layers. Farm Sample Event
From Existing Field Sample Layer: Directed Sampling layers may be created from field sample layers (even those with data associated with them) and then those directed sampling layers can be converted back to empty field sample layers. Field Sample Layer Exports

What should be selected for "CSV Column" drop-down menu within Import Sample Data window?

  • The contents of the "CSV Column" drop-down menus are populated directly by the CSV file provided. If unsure of which columns to select, spreadsheet reading software like Open Office Calc, Libre Office or Microsoft Excel can be used to view CSV files to determine which column headers contain needed nutrient values.
