Adding Boundaries
Adding Boundaries for fields in the system can be done in several ways: drawing Boundaries, uploading boundary files, CLU boundaries, and FieldAlytics Mobile drawn boundaries.
Drawing Exterior Polygon Boundaries
1. In Main, create a new field. For more help with creating fields, see help topic: Profile Tree and Management 2. Expand the field in the profile tree and click " Draw Boundary" from within profile tree. 3. On the right side gray panel, click "+ Add Polygon". 4. The boundary editor opens and shows floating tools. Click the Draw Polygon button. 5. Click to place first vertex point, then hover over drag your mouse over to the next spot you would like to place a vertex 6. Continue clicking to place vertex points, drawing the shape of the polygon.
7. When finished, click the first vertex point to close polygon or click "Finish" button.
8. Click floating save icon on left of map screen.
9. Repeat steps #3 through #8 for each needed polygon. Please Note: Overlapping exterior polygons will automatically merge upon save. Polygons drawn inside existing polygons for the same field will become "Interior Polygons" and be subtracted from the Field Boundary area calculation. See subsection below: |
Drawing Interior PolygonsOnce a boundary has an existing exterior polygon, an interior polygon may be added. Boundary acreage calculations subtract interior polygon acreage.
Editing BoundariesFor help specific to editing existing boundaries or recovering previous boundaries, see help topic: Editing Boundaries and Boundary History Tool |
Floating Tool Functions
|
Measure Tool: Click this tool and then drop two points on the map to see the distance between. If three or more points are dropped you will see the area inside those points. |
|
Save: Click the Save button to save changes and exit boundary draw/edit mode. |
Cancel: Click the Cancel button to exit boundary draw/edit mode without saving any changes.
Draw Polygon: Click the Draw Polygon button to draw polygon by dropping each desired vertex dot.
Draw Circle: Click the Circle tool (AKA Pivot tool) to create a circular polygon. Click and drag to define circle radius, then release. System will display two vertex dots. Click and drag over exterior vertex dot to re-adjust circle size. Click and drag over interior vertex dot to drag entire circle into desired position. Click Save.
Edit Layers: Click the Edit Layers button to expose polygon vertex nodes for the selected polygon. This allows the user to click and drag existing any existing vertex, as well as provides the ability to add new boundary vertex points by clicking the opaque points between those that are solid white.
Delete Polygon: Click to delete a polygon, and immediately re-draw a replacement polygon.
Split Polygon: Click the Split tool to draw a line that will split a polygon. Click to place first vertex node outside of the field boundary, then continue clicking until split line has been defined, making sure the last vertex node is also outside of the field boundary. Rapidly double click anywhere to stop drawing split line. Click Save.
Rectangle selection tool: Click to select multiple vertex nodes at a time. Click the Rectangle selection tool, then click and drag rectangle to cover all desired vertex nodes. Once mouse button is released, system will display "Delete Selected Vertices" button. Click Delete Selected Vertices or click Cancel. |
CLU Boundary Add
1. With the boundary editor open (click " Draw Boundary" , or click on an existing boundary layer) click "Import Polygon." 2. "Select Import Source" opens, click "Common Land Units (CLU)" button. 3. If there are CLU boundaries available, they will display with black outlines. Hovering over a polygon will display the interior of the polygon in blue, click each desired polygon to add it to the field. 4. Click floating save button when finished. |
Uploading Boundary Files
Previously mapped boundaries may be uploaded to the system under a Grower, as a batch or under a field, singly. Boundary file upload criteria:
- File must be in ESRI Shapefile format.
- A unique column in the database (.dbf) for every profile level (e.g. a column for Farm names and a column for Field names)
- One row for each member of the lowest level added (e.g. one row per Field)
- Shapefiles must use Lat/Lon coordinates (WGS84 datum). In the future, other input projection types may be supported.
- Shapefiles must have the .shp, .dbf and .shx files compressed together into a single zip file.

Uploading Batch Shape Files
1. In the Main tab, right-click the Grower profile for the boundary data upload. 2. The system opens small menu window; Select option to " Add Data". 3. "Data Upload" window opens. Select Data Type: "Profile Boundary", then click "Browse" button. 4. The system opens an expiratory window to the computer being used. Use this window to navigate to and select the zip file containing the boundaries for the farm, then click "Open". 5. Back on the "Data Upload" window, click "Add/Upload" button. The system opens a red lined window. Use this window to define which column within the .dbf files contains the field name information and which one contains the farm name information. Please Note: The contents of these two drop-down menus are populated directly by the column headers in file. 6. Click "Upload" button. Please Note: For larger uploads, clicking "Email Results" causes the system to notify the user by email when the upload is complete. The Field level upload functions the same way as the batch upload, except it is begun by right clicking over the field level within the profile tree. Uploading at the field level does not require all of the same attributes as the grower level import. After clicking the "Add/Upload" button, the boundary polygon is simply overridden for the field profile. |
Importing RTK/ High Resolution Boundaries
High Resolution field boundaries may now be imported to FieldAlytics. To add one of these boundaries to a field, start by navigating to the field in the profile tree or by creating a new field. Right click on the field name and select Add Data.
Within the Data Upload window, select Boundary within the Data Type, and click on Choose File to open the file explored to select the Shape file that contains the boundary. The Shape file must be in a zipped (compressed) folder that contains the shp, shx and the dbf. Once the file has been selected, the box next to High Precision Boundary must be selected to continue. Click Add/Upload to finish the boundary upload.
The boundaries within the application are safeguarded against further modifications. Any editing would undermine the value of the boundary collection service. However, existing precision boundaries can be supplanted by new boundary versions. These layers can subsequently be exported, and in the future, they will be integrated for communication with third parties as the need arises.
