Why is my Shapefile failing to import?
Folder/File name contains a period
Check to confirm the folder name and/or files do not contain a " . "(period) in the name.
Rename the Folder/File if a " . "(period) is present in the name:
- Right Click on the Folder/File name>Rename>Remove the "."(period) from the name
- If the Folder is Zipped/Compressed, ONLY the folder can be renamed. Note: If you need to Unzip a folder, please reference the steps below in the area "To unzip files/folder".
- If the Folder is Uncompressed/Unzipped, both the folder and file name can be renamed.
Proper Shapefile Folder structure for Upload:
1. Folder is Zipped
2. When the Zipped folder is opened you see the files(dbf, shp, and shx) displayed within the file explorer window.
3. If the Zipped folder is selected and an unzipped folder is inside, the resulting zipped folder will fail to load into FieldAlytics due to improper folder structure. Perform the steps below to unzip the files/folder and to zip the files properly for upload into FieldAlytics.
To unzip files/folder
- Open File Explorer and find the zipped folder. or on Desktop:
- To unzip the entire folder, right-click on the folder to select Extract All, and then follow the instructions.
- To unzip a single file or folder, double-click the zipped folder to open it. Then, drag or copy the item from the zipped folder to a new location.
To zip files
1.Ensure the folder(s) the Shapefile is within is unzipped.
2. Confirm the Shapefile with identical file name( Example SHP File for Help Doc) contains the three necessary file formats for upload: DBF, SHP, and SHX.
3.Highlight all files, Right-click the file you want to zip, and then select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
4. The new Compressed (Zipped) folder can be selected for upload into FieldAlytics within the upload screen of desired data layer(Boundary, Field Samples, Attributes...).
Other possible errors
- Folder structure is improper: Fieldalytics, Fieldalytics link and the Add Data feature require a certain folder structure for uploads, you can read more here. Solutions listed above also.
- Timeout due to size: Extremely large file(s) can cause a timeout. If you are concerned about an upload failing due to size please reach out to the Fieldalytics Support Group
- Incorrect file format: Fieldalytics and Fieldalytics LINK only support certain data types and extensions. For more information visit their individual articles here - Fieldalytics Logged Data Web Uploader / LINK Data Upload
- Column/Header misalignment: When importing shapefile data such as field samples or yield it's important that column(s), data type and product(s) are in alignment with expected values. e.g. Ensuring that elements (P, K, Mg etc) match their respective DBF columns when importing soil samples.
