Yield Normalization

Normalization is a statistical averaging of available yield data. This functionality allows users to select desired and available measured yield and yield potential layers for fields to create normalized yield layers. Follow steps below to generate Yield Normalization data layers, resulting reports, or for example report pages.

Generating Yield Normalization Reports

  1. Click on any Field Level within the Main tab.
  2. From the right side light gray panel, click the "Tools" drop-down menu and select "Yield Normalization."
  3. The system opens "Yield Normalization" utility window. This window will remain open open until the user clicks "Submit."
  4. Make desired selections and enter a name for the new Normalized Yield layer then click "Submit". See image to the right.

  5. (For Live Processing) The system will process then displays the data visually within the map screen. See "Yield Normalization Layer Options" subsection below.
  6. (For Background Processing/Send Email selection) Email alert that processing is complete will arrive within the notification center, and requested yield normalization layer will be automatically stored under the field.

Yield Normalization Menu Options Explained

  • Missing Yield Area Input: If a yield data set has coverage holes, the system automatically uses the yield average for yield normalization calculations. To override input desired yield value to the right of the listed layer, and the system will utilize that value for the calculations instead.

  • Overlay SSURGO on PDF: When selected, this option causes any resulting pdf to include SSURGO soil region information as an overlay within the map areas.
  • Send Email: When selected, this option causes the Yield Normalization layer to process in the background instead of live. For best performance, if normalizing more than 4 layers of yield, (or particularly large fields) use this option to circumvent processing time-out.
  • Additional Emails: When running as a background process (Send Email selected), the user name logged in at the time of request will get an email alert that their yield normalization layer has been created. Input additional email addresses within this option to cause email alerts to send to additional recipients upon process completion.
  • Normalization Layer Name: When Yield Normalization completes (Send Email selected), it will be stored as a field layer within the "Yield Normalization" folder, with the name defined within this input field. Please Note: Normalization Layer Name input is not required to be filled out when running the analysis live. The name can be input when saving the layer if it is being run live.

Yield Normalization Layer Options

For Yield normalization requests processed in the background, locate the following options by expanding the "Yield Normalization" folder, then clicking the stored yield normalization layer. Options display on right side gray panel.

  • Create Yield Potential: This option allows the user to create yield potentials from the normalized yield layer. Users can define the crop, measured unit, as well as the minimum and maximum desired yield values. These input values will then be applied across the normalized layer to create the new yield potential layer.
  • Report: This option provides a Yield Normalization report. Example Yield Normalization report below.
  • Save Layer : This button only displays on Yield Normalization requests that were processed live, and allows the resulting layer to be named and saved within the.

  • Reading Yield Normalization Data sets/Reports

Yield Normalization data histograms can be read by considering the 100% value as the calculated areas of "Average" performance. Consider the example pages below. The white areas of the map are areas that report average performance across all the considered yield layers. The darker red areas performed under the average, while the darker green areas performed above average.

    Example Yield Normalization Report Pages

Yield Normalization — Auto-Create a Yield Potential Layer

v9.8 Update — The Create Yield Potential option is now available directly within the Yield Normalization form in both the Single Yield Normalization and Field-Level (batch) tools. Previously, this required a separate step after normalization completed.

Yield Normalization statistically averages available yield data across selected layers to produce a normalized yield layer. As of v9.8, users can optionally generate a Yield Potential (YP) layer in the same step — eliminating the need to return to the saved layer to create it afterward.

Single Yield Normalization — Creating a YP Layer at Submission

    1. Click on a Field Level profile within the Main tab.
    2. From the right-side panel, click the Tools drop-down and select Yield Normalization. The Yield Normalization dialog opens.
    3. Select the desired layers from Select Yield Layers.
    4. Optionally, select any existing Yield Potential layers from Select Yield Potential Layers.
    5. Enter a Normalization Layer Name (required).
    6. Check Create Yield Potential layer from normalized. A Yield Potential Layer section expands inline with the following required fields:
      • Commodity — search and select the crop type
      • Unit — select the yield unit (e.g., bu/ac)
      • Year — select the year (dropdown shows past 10 years and next 2 years)
      • Name — auto-populates with a default (e.g., "2026 YP - Normalized"); edit as needed
    7. Make any other desired selections (Overlay SSURGO on Report, Send Email). If Send Email is checked, an Additional Emails field will appear — enter any additional recipients who should receive a notification when normalization completes.
    8. Click Submit.

The system will run normalization and automatically assign average yield values to the new YP layer based on the normalization results. No additional steps are needed to create the Yield Potential layer.

Field-Level (Batch) Yield Normalization — Creating a YP Layer at Submission

The Batch Yield Normalization tool processes normalization across multiple fields at once. The Create Yield Potential Layer option is available here as well, applying the same YP metadata to all fields in the batch.

    1. Select a Grower or higher profile level within the Main tab.
    2. From the right-side panel, click the Tools drop-down and select Batch Yield Normalization. The Batch Yield Normalization dialog opens.
    3. For each row, select the Enter Year, Crops, and Data Source. Use the + button to add additional year/crop rows as needed. Check Required on any row to require that layer for a field to be included.
    4. Enter a Normalization Layer Name (required).
    5. Optionally, add recipients to the Additional Email field. Emails matching existing FieldAlytics usernames will follow their notification preferences.
    6. Check Create Yield Potential layer from each normalized yield (same metadata for all fields). A Yield Potential Layer section expands with the following required fields:
      • Commodity (CDMS) — search and select the crop type
      • Yield unit — select the yield unit (e.g., bu/ac)
      • Year — pre-populates with the current year; adjust as needed (dropdown shows past 10 years and next 2 years)
      • Yield Potential Layer Name — enter a name for the new YP layer
    7. Optionally check Overlay SSURGO on Report.
    8. Click Submit.

The system will process normalization across all applicable fields and automatically assign average yield values to each field's YP layer based on that field's individual normalization results. The same Commodity, Yield unit, Year, and Name metadata is applied across all fields in the batch.

    How Yield Values Are Assigned

When the Create Yield Potential Layer option is used, the system determines yield values automatically — no manual min/max entry is required. It uses the average yield values identified during the normalization process for each field and applies those values to the new Yield Potential layer.

Note: If you need to adjust the minimum, maximum, or average yield values after the layer is created, you can do so by editing the newly created Yield Potential layer. See Yield Potential for details.

    Year Dropdown — Updated Range

The Year dropdown throughout the Yield Normalization tools now displays only the past 10 years and next 2 years, keeping the list current and relevant. If you need to work with yield data outside this range, contact your Customer Success representative.
